September Interview

This month we interview a very Hip Dad with a rather interesting job

Philip Koh1. Hi, could you do a self introduction?

My name is Philip Koh. I am a Singaporean and I am an associate trainer in Preschool Education with various schools and private institutions. As for my age, can I leave it to you to make a guess – early 30s, mid-30s, late 30s or early 40s?

2. You have quite an interesting job. Could you tell us more about it?

I train students who aspire to be child care or kindergarten teachers. My training modules include music and movement, visual arts, mathematics, planning and designing learning environment for young children, and other subjects related to the development of young children. I conduct workshops and seminars for parents and teachers too.

3. How did you end up taking up this job?

I was inspired by my trainers when I took up courses in Early Childhood Education during my earlier days. Liked them, I realized that I wanted to make a difference in young children’s lives. About nine years ago, I made a career switch from an army officer to a preschool teacher, a principal managing a child care centre and a trainer now.

I guess the greatest satisfaction is to know your purpose in life, what you really want out of it. I have identified that my purpose is really to make an impact in the lives of young children through a multiplying effect by working with preschool teachers and parents.

4. What made you want to take up dance classes? Enjoying the classes so far?

I wanted to learn some new dance techniques and integrate them with the music and movement modules that I am teaching. Children are active and energetic. Dance would be a great way for them to release their energy and it helps nurture their creativity too. Dance also allows children to explore their bodies and provides opportunities to express themselves freely. It is an excellent tool for motor skills development too.

I was a bit reserved initially. My movements were stiff and unnaturally. But after a few sessions, I overcome my fears and embarrassment. In fact, I am having a great time now!

Philip Koh5. How are the classes coming along for you?

The classes have been awesome so far. I find the instructors effective and patient, especially Lixin’s classes. She has a way to help us remember the steps easily. Due to my irregular working hours, I really appreciate the flexibility at Studio Wu. Being able to join any class at the Intro and Beginner’s level was really a blessing. Furthermore, I have two locations that I choose to go for my classes.

6. How do you manage your timings between work, family, and dance?

It is really making a commitment to allocate time for what you want. I try to fit in time for dance and gym workout in between my training sessions.

7. Any other interesting things are you are doing in your free time?

I work out at the gym quite regularly. I enjoy reading and I am trying to find time to take up golf and tennis too.

8. Any food/hangout places to recommend?

I don’t eat much but someone introduced to me this place called “Botak Jones.” They serve hamburgers, steaks, and sandwiches in the American style. The price is reasonable, within ten dollars per meal and the portion is quite big. They have quite a number of outlets around Singapore. Check them out if you are really hungry!

9. Any last words for our readers out there?

Live life with purpose and meaning! Go for your dream and believe in yourself. Be good at what you do and introduce more friends to engage the dance culture.
