Phrase: Dancing is the vertical expression of a horizontal desire legalized by music. One can never have enough checkered shirts.
An avid fitted cap collector, Kevin believes that dance is an art form that everyone can appreciate, be it old-school funk styles or contemporary jazz. His style focuses on utilizing one’s body in expressing and immersing oneself in the entirety of the choreography and yet maintaining a sense of balance and control.
With deep influences from the L.A. dance community, Kevin aims to create and form dance pieces that reflect his quirkiness and involve everyone in class to embrace his unique form of dance and movement.
He also wishes to share his love for creamy chicken pasta and fervently encourages everyone to buy more checkered shirts.
Without the passion and dedication that I devote to this art form, I would undoubtedly find myself losing all meaning in life and becoming a faceless drone in modern society.
By being able to have this pseudo-identity gives me an outlet for expression of which I am eternally thankful for. I have always believed in diversity in life and dancing grants a freedom where I can douse myself in and emerge a completely different person with a contrasting persona to match.
Inspiration comes from all places; muses evolve from anything. Trends from overseas dance communities would inadvertently have a profound influence on the local dance scene. Music, ever fluctuating and evolving through the ages, has always been a major factor in defining my dance styles and movements. However, for me, inspiration comes most from the people around me, be it my students, instructors or even casual passers-by that stop by the studio and peek inside for a quick look. Because dance is an expression and people are the ones that breathe life into it.
Incredible is too mild a word. Being able to share the same stage as these talented individuals is both marvelous and a dream come true indeed. One can liken the experience to me transiting from gawking idiotically in front on their YouTube videos to being PART of the video itself. However, the most remarkable lesson that I gleaned from this amazing episode was, despite their fame and massive fan adoration, that they were the most down-to-earth and humble dancers I’ve ever met, which further iterates a fundamental fact of life, that one should always be a student and never stop learning.
I seek the secret manual to construct my very own light-saber and how to become a Jedi Knight.
